As a small business advisor, I speak to business owners about their businesses and the challenges they face. The Power of Gratitude can be very effective.
3 Uses for The Power of Gratitude:
- Team Members
- Show Appreciation
A while back I referred a family-owned business to my neighbor. A few weeks later the neighbor told me the business I referred had completed the repairs on his home. The cost was in line with what he had expected, work was done professionally, and he was quite happy with the way things turned out. I was happy it all worked out.
I had pretty much forgotten about the referral all-together until I received a holiday card from the family-owned business with a hand written thank you for the specific referral. Inside the card was also a gift card to a local restaurant. He also encouraged us to keep passing his name onto others who might need air or heating work done.
This example shows how you can use the power of “Thank You” to keep in others’ thoughts. Now, I don’t need to be bribed to refer someone who does good work, but this showed me how this tech keeps his pipeline full. There are so many different ways to do this, from gifts to notes, emails, and social media.
Giving thanks this time of year is a great way also to recognize members of your team. It shows you are paying attention, that you care and giving thanks makes people feel valued. Studies have shown that showing your gratitude can be more powerful than a pay raise.
And don’t forget to thank yourself. On a personal note, Oprah suggests you keep a gratitude journal. “On a daily basis, find something you are appreciative of or find something you are grateful for and start a journal. You might even want to call it your appreciation journal or gratitude journal and go to it [and write] five minutes a day.”
I keep a list of everything I am grateful for on my desk. The gratitude list helps keep me focused on what’s most important.
“The single greatest thing you can do to change your life today would be to start being grateful for what you have right now. And the more grateful you are, the more you get.” ~ Oprah
