Most successful entrepreneurs create a plan for the year. Strategic business planning is your map for a successful year. The key is to follow the plan, tweak the plan need be – along the way, but always have your goals and objectives in site. Where most business owners go wrong is spending the time to create the plan and then never looking at the information again until it’s too late to achieve the goals set in place.
Believe it or not – with one-third of the year still left, there is still time to accomplish some or most of the goals you previously set for 2012. The key now is to revisit the set goals and achieve them.
Here are 3 tips to deliver your year end goals:
- Revisit your set goals for 2012
- Create a plan for achieving specific goals that are attainable
- Make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T
- Develop a time line and action steps for accomplishing the goals
Start by identifying the one goal you absolutely must achieve by the end of the year. Make sure the goal is S.M.A.R.T goal meaning Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.
Then write down 5 tasks you need to complete in the next 30-60 days to achieve the goal. It’s important to make yourself accountable to the tasks at hand. One tip would be to create tasks in Outlook with dates of completion to remind yourself the goal at hand and what needs to be accomplished to complete it. Check in at the 30 day mark to see what tasks have been completed and what’s outstanding. Short-term goal setting like this will result in achieving bigger goals.
Remember, that one-third of the year is still left and it’s not too late. A positive frame of mind is the first step to obtaining your goal. Then implementing the tasks at hand are critical to achieving it.
We’ve all seen underdogs come from behind to win the game in the last quarter. It’s really not too late, but it’s up to you and your desire to end the year ahead.
As Jim Collins speaks about in Great by Choice, good and bad luck comes to all; it’s how you plan and execute that determines your return on luck.
