There are many ways to guide a business through a period of expansion. A good way to start is to discuss ideas and group problem solving with your team.
How can you create an effective brainstorming session?
Researchers have found that group problem solving can be extremely effective if done the right way. Many times when you want to come up with growth strategies you just gather your team in a conference room and start throwing out ideas.
The main issue with throwing out ideas is that you are influencing others during this process. When someone suggests an idea, your mind limits itself to related memories, eliminating ideas you might have considered and impeding the creative process.
To Develop a Business Growth Strategy and Create a Successful Business Brainstorming Session, here are 4 tips:
- Think independently first
- Share all ideas
- Review separately
- Discuss together
First, ask each person to generate his or her own ideas before the group comes together. It’s great to have others come up with ideas on their own, so they won’t be influenced by others.
Then ask each person to submit his/her best ideas. Compile the best ideas onto a document / email and then send them to the group via email.
Before you meet in a group, ask each person to take notes on the other ideas. Have them look for the potential advantages/disadvantages of each idea. Ask them to rank the ideas, but for them to try not to be over critcal of any ideas.
Lastly, now it’s time to bring the group in for the brainstorm. Ask each person to suggest ideas that seem the most promising, then debate the pros and cons.
Because each person reviewed the ideas independently, when you do settle on a solution, the group will be more likely to support the outcome. It’s usually easier to get group buy-in if everyone feels that they were part of the process. And during the process you will have most likely come to a better solution.
Your team is at the heart of your business everyday. Brainstorming to create a growth strategy together makes the group part of the success.
