Because effective team building helps retain your best employees — which means overall your business is more productive and more likely to reach it’s goals.
Team building not only retains employees, but it also creates a collaborative effort and sharing that can create brilliant ideas and concepts.
Team Building Taken to the Next Level
I recently read about the Menlo Software Factory. At Menlo they take team building to a whole new level. The entire company is based on team building and the concept has been successful for them.
At Menlo everyone works in pairs, including the CEO. Not only do they work in pairs, but they sit at one computer, using one mouse. Although one pair is assigned to work through a logic problem, everyone takes responsibility for its solution.
The Menlo Software Factory, “is most notable for what you don’t see,” says CEO Richard Sheridan. “No cubes. No walls. No doors. The teams decide where to put the tables. There’s no corner office—no CEO Land. I sit at a five-foot table with another person. The teams put me where they want me.”
Unique Team Hiring
Since Menlo has taken such a creative approach to building the company around team building and sharing of ideas, hiring new employees is also a team project. Given the fact that Menlo runs quite different than most businesses finding the right employees to match the unique environment is imperative.
Employees also get a say on promotions. At Menlo, because your co-workers know you best they decide if you’re ready to be promoted.
