Unfortunately, for many business owners the formula for team actually takes on an entirely different and often unfortunate equation:
Time (wasted) + Errors = Anxiety and Missed Opportunities
Why is it so tough to manage people?
No business owner intentionally seeks out bad employees and for the most part most employees really WANT to do a good job. So where does the concept of “team” fall into chaos?
The most fundamental reason is also the simplest:
Lack of a common, consistently articulated vision
As a business owner you must lead your team, but do you have the experience, skill sets and tools to actually be a good manager?
For most of us, learning to manage is very much an “on-the-job-training” experience and some of us come from circumstances where we’ve experienced a long line of ill-equipped supervisors as role models. So how can you possibly become a good people manager if all of your past training has been from bad people managers? Moreover, does that also mean the situation is hopeless? Far from it.
Good leadership and team building skills can be learned, quickly and efficiently IF you as the business owner are willing to make the time to learn sound leadership fundamentals.
- A willingness to lead by example
- Learning to rise above the “day-to-day”
- And forming a strategic vision for your business that your people can understand and follow.
It is also important to build a consistent performance management process, immediately reward and/or recognize good work and also immediately address poor performance in a constructive manner. Understanding different personality types and how to influence them is also of critical importance.
Moreover, learning to become an effective leader is an ongoing process. You can never stop learning new skills and techniques and behaviors that will ultimately enable you to build the kind of team you want in order to realize the kind of business you want.
All that said, the reality is that building an effective team starts with the business owner.
It starts with you.
