There is a science to closing a sale.
Selling is something that I think gets better with practice. Some may disagree, but there are definitely some techniques you want to avoid after reading this article.
Here are 3 Closing Techniques to avoid:
- Assume the close
- Try TOO hard
- Free Sample
Don’t assume the close. I think when you are trying to sell something you can’t assume the close. You come off kind of arrogant. You can not assume that just because the customer shows interest in your product or service, that they are a sure thing.
Trying too hard to close a sale can really back fire as well. You don’t want to appear desperate. Prospective customers don’t want someone pushing them to close the deal in a “hard sell” fashion. I think in some cases you have to put yourself in the customers shoes. Would you want someone jamming something down your throat?
Avoid the trap of the “free sample”. This is where you provide the prospect with the product to try for free in hopes that they will fall in love with it and purchase. This rarely happens – you may encounter that you a.) have difficulty getting your sample back or b.) worse they are a serial sampler which means after the trial sampling with you they go to your competitor and sample with them and so forth. Don’t waste your time on this back and forth. Get yourself a real customer.
